Floorcloths date back as early as the 1400's Originally made from torn and tattered boat sails they were used for a very practical purpose of keeping the draft from coming up through the floor boards. Women of lesser means would decorate the floorcloths with beautiful and intricate designs. They reached their height during the late 18th and early 19th century and died out with the advent of linoleum. Today, with the popularity of hardwood floors, floorcloths are making a comeback! A floorcloth is a great way to add a little bit of color and history to your home. My floorcloths are made from heavy duty canvas, primed and painted on both sides with latex paint and finished off with several coats of acrylic polyurethane. Acrylic polyurethane will allow the canvas to remain flexible for rolling and will avoid cracks in the finish unlike traditional polyurethane. The hems are folded and mitered to allow the floorcloth to lay flat. Floorcloths are not just beautiful they are practical too! Easy to clean, just wipe with soap and water. Hypo allergenic. Perfect for a home with kids and pets!
